Health Team Conducts 2nd Medical & Dental Outreach
~ By: Jane B. Yap

23-24 May 2009, Kampung Sungai Mahang, Nilai – a team composed of 1 Medical Doctor, 1 Dentist, 1 RN, 2 Nutritionists, 1 Dental Nurse, 2 Dental Assistants, 2 Student nurses, 1 medical student and 10 volunteers drove to Nilai on Saturday afternoon for an overnight Medical & Dental outreach for the Kampung Orang Asli.

The team was met by jubilant villagers headed by ‘Tok Batin – the village head and the matriarch of the community, Macik (Aunty) Kanna and her ever helpful son-in-law, Pak Cik (Uncle) Panjang. The quiet and clean village was situated up above the mountain of Nilai, overlooking the city. It has the most beautiful waterfall with small fishes and little prawns to nibble your toes as you take a dip in the icy and vivid water.

The event kicked off at 5pm with a hygiene health talk and cooking demo conducted by Ms Florence Devany, a Dental Nurse and Klang-ACC Health leader. It was followed by giving away of soap, toys and clothes for the villagers as well as sampling of healthy food such as savoury oatmeal and green salads.

Some of the villagers’ children stayed back for the sundown worship held just outside the community hall overlooking the town of Nilai. Everyone enjoyed the singing, prayer and the Devotion led by Ms. Jane Yap.

At 8pm the Medical and Dental outreach was declared open and a throng of villagers came to avail all the free services. At 10pm, the team has to take a rest to get ready for another session in the morning.

It was a good feeling to wake up in the crowing of the cock, the fresh air and the sound of the waterfall. The team, together with the Orang Asli children decided to hike and take a dip at the nearby waterfall – to the shrill delight of everyone. There was a good camaraderie between the team and the kids as everyone was on a jovial spirit.

Overall, the Dental team served 60 patients while the Medical team saw and gave away medications to 40 patients. It was indeed a great privilege to be able to serve God and show His love to this warm, kind-hearted and loving people.

It was difficult to say goodbye, but we did with an assurance to be back and conduct some simple activities to 12 teenagers who have shown their enthusiasm to get to know our loving God.

(The 2nd Medical & Dental Outreach was a collaborative effort between Seremban church: Pastor Minsun, Sis Runee & Julita Kitang together with the members; the PAH team – Dr. Daniel Yeoh, Dr. Peter Loh and Mdm.
