JB City Health Expo

“Event like this has never been conducted in Johor Bahru (JB), this is the first time that we as a church are doing it for the public, in such a huge scale as this,” so were the words of Pastor Samuel Money, District Pastor of Johor Bahru churches.

02-03 August 2009, fifteen volunteers drove from Kuala Lumpur to JB in order to participate in the first JB City Health expo organized by the Seventh Day Adventist church in cooperation with the JB City Square and the local government of Johor Bahru.

The event kicked off with the opening ceremony headed by Y.B. Mok, municipal councillor of the area. The invited guest, Y.B. Datuk Shahrir, Member of Parliament in JB was unable to make it at the last minute due to a pressing appointment, nevertheless, a contribution of RM 2,000 was handed to the church as a token of appreciation for the service to the community in which we are conducting.

The 60-member volunteers consisted of four Medical Doctors, five Nurses, four IT people, 4 Pastors, Elders, Young people, mothers, church members, all worked tirelessly for two days in order to serve the community through health screening, counselling, cooking demo, hydrotherapy demo, exercise, temperance awareness, among others.

It was a sight to behold that churches from as far as Pontian, Kulai, Skudai, Kota Masai, Mega Ria, Ulu Tiram, and not forgetting the JB churches – all came in full force to support this event and to see everyone engrossed in the work, with no language barrier whatsoever.

The whole event was a showcase of God’s love to His people, as one participant commented; “what you all are doing is very noble, you mean everything here is free of charge? And I get to see the Doctor without any charges? Why do you all do this?” In which I replied with my sweetest smile; “We belong to the Seventh Day Adventist church, God has blessed us with so many things, including good health and we just want to share it with people like you.”

To all the church members who served during the health expo – you all were heroes in God’s sight. I was amazed as to what He has done through you. You have created the greatest impact to the community of JB and God’s light has shone in you during those times. Keep up the good work!
