Sending Out of Medical Missionaries & Health Retreat
- By Jane Yap, PEM Health
Director
Almost 60 guests, comprising of Peninsular Malaysia Health
Leaders, Medical Missionaries and their families as well as
Nutrition & Health certificate graduates gathered for a 3-day
retreat at the beautiful Le Paris Resort in Port Dickson.
With the theme, “Here Am I Lord, Send Me!” the event kicked off
with an inspiring message by Pastor Gration Perera, SAUM (Southeast
Asia Union) Health Director, which set in motion the tone of the
whole event.
After almost 3 months, the Medical Missionaries also known as Health
Promoters, were trained to do simple health remedies such as
hydrotherapy, charcoal therapy, use of herbs and salt, massage,
concepts of disease and illness, how to conduct health expo,
nutrition classes, among others. Ms. Tabitha Andrews, accepted the
certificate on being the most excellent student, rising above the
rest.
“I waited 2 years to answer God’s call and now I am telling Him;
“here am I, send me!” she said as she accepted the award.
Dr. Manny Reyes, Professor from the Adventist University of the
Philippines gave challenging sermons on becoming a Medical
Missionary, mostly deriving from his own Missionary experiences,
working among Moslems in Mindanao, Philippines in the late 70’s and
early 80’s.
It was a heart-wrenching moment during the last day of the
retreat when the Missionaries have to bid their goodbyes to their
respective families, & as they met their new Mentors to be sent out,
2 by 2 in the communities where they will serve for the next 9
months.
God be praised for His wonderful expression of love!

Note:
Medical Missionary Volunteer Program (MMVP) is a one-year “hands-on”
training program using Health as a tool to bring hope to people in
the community. This program is both spiritual and academic in nature
as it is tied up with the Global University for Lifelong Learning
(GULL) through Portman College. It is divided into 2 parts: 3 months
theory and 9 months practical where candidates are sent 2 by 2 to a
chosen community and are assigned with a Mentor.
